Maine Democratic state Rep. Scott Hamann has been removed from the state’s Marijuana Legalization Implementation and Health and Human Services committees as punishment for a Facebook post his superiors described as “inexcusable.”
“Trump is a half term president, at most, especially if I ever get within 10 feet of that pussy,” Rep. Scott Hamann wrote in a Facebook post on Tuesday, as The Daily Caller reports.
“100% of intelligent Americans agree that Trump is a complete loser. But go back to clinging to your guns because you’re afraid. Pussy,” he said in the post, which appeared to be in response to a comment made by a Trump supporter.
After receiving backlash for the post in which he called the President “anti-American,” and an “admitted rapist” who was “installed by the Russians,” Hamann apologized in a written statement to Bangor Daily News.
“I regret my impulsive decision to post something aggressively sarcastic and inappropriate in a Facebook exchange with a childhood friend,” Hamann wrote in the statement.
“While the tone of the post was born out of frustration with the vile language currently surrounding politics, I should not have responded with the same language. This is not language I typically use, it does not reflect my personal values, and while misguided, it was intended to make a visceral point about the devolving political discourse in America.”
In another article, Bangor Daily News reports that Hamann has since been removed from his posts on the legislative committees.
The outlet quotes Maine House Speaker Sara Gideon (D-Freeport) as stating, “I hope this consequence sends a clear signal to all members of the House of Representatives that they are expected to conduct themselves with respect at all times and in all media.”
Gideon also reportedly described Hamann’s remarks as “inexcusable and unacceptable.”
