While Trump administration struggle against Sharia Law, Democrats are attacking them and calling them “Islamophobic.” Montana Democrts are working to block a legislation from getting passed, which would deny the Sharia law from being enforced into the state’s judicial system.
The Bill, presented by the Republican Keith Roger, blocks the application of foreign law in Montana’s courts, especially pointing out on the form of Islamic Law used in the Middle East, known as Sharia Law.
According to the Democrats, the bill is created only to target Muslim communities. “I think it sends a dangerous message to minority groups both here living in our state and wanting to come visit our state, just merely on the fact that you may be different. I truly believe this law is repugnant. I believe this is not who we are as Montanans.”- said the member of the Democratic party, Shane Morigeau, D-Missoula, while debating the bill. “
In order to show that the bill is not designed only to target the Muslims, the Democratic member of the Montana Legislature, Ellie Hill Smith proposed an amendment to the bill to include a ban on the Law of Moses. Her proposal failed.
“The courts have said that laws that single out certain religions violate the First Amendment,” Smith said, claiming that it was “peppered with anti-Muslim bigotry.”
Democrat Laurie Bishop warned legislators “not to forget the roots of this bill,” noting that “our children are watching.”
According to the Rep. Brad Tschida, the bill is an attempt to push back against a “constitution [that] is constantly under assault.”
The bill passed on party lines by 56-44. Also, bills targeting Sharia Law, passed in North Carolina, Kansas, Lousiana, Alabama, Tennessee, South Dakota and Arizona.
